About the Residents:
Tonye B. Phillips (She/Her) – Camp Sherman, OR
Native Oregonian currently living full time in Camp Sherman, Oregon. My entire life has been surrounded by creativity. My current focus is on fiber arts. This includes quilting, knitting, embroidery and hand applique. My style leans towards whimsical, colorful and a bit of the abstract.
Sujata Shah (She/Her) –Pleasanton, CA
Sujata Shah is an award-winning quilter and designer and author of Cultural Fusion Quilts. She finds inspiration in the rich handmade tradition of her home country, India; the quilts of Gee’s Bend; Indian and American utilitarian quilts and African textiles. Drawn to imperfections and irregularities of handmade crafts, Sujata believes each quilt has the personality of the maker. Using imperfections as a design element has led her to abstract interpretations of traditional quilt blocks. She finds hand stitching therapeutic and nourishing to the soul, ultimately helping her write personal stories in stitches.
Sue Spargo (She/Her) – Uniontown, OH
Born in Zambia and educated in South Africa, Sue Spargo draws creative inspiration from the vibrant colors and energy of traditional African designs, as well as the diverse environments she has experienced across England and the United States. Working in rich, saturated palettes, she layers hand dyed wools, fabrics, and stitchery to create contemporary folk-art quilts with embroidery. An international author and teacher, Sue offers workshops, publications, and a curated range of threads, fabrics, and kits through suespargo.com, a family-run business dedicated to supporting makers Worldwide.
Laura Wasilowski (She/Her) – Elgin, IL
Laura Wasilowski is a textile artist creating free-form hand embroideries and improvised art quilts. Working with her hand-dyed fabrics and threads, her pictorial artwork is narrative in nature and whimsical in style, expressing her joy and love of making art. Laura’s art is collected and exhibited internationally and has appeared in multiple publications since her career began in 1992. She is also the author of 5 books on creating textile art and an online instructor with Creative Spark.
Living in Elgin, Illinois, she tends her garden, cares for her family, and creates small ceramic sculptures when not stitching her colorful fabrics.
