A Conversation with Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias
Dominican director Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias is the winner of the Silver Bear for best director at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival for his film Pepe, and the first Latin American director to ever win this prize.
He will be in Cincinnati to screen Pepe at the Esquire Theater and converse with audiences afterwards. There will be one showing only at 7pm, Thursday, September 4.
Tickets are available on the Esquire Theater website: https://www.esquiretheatre.com/movie/pepe-2024/.
About Pepe:
Pepe is the strange story of the first and last hippo killed in the Americas, recounted from beyond the grave. A voice that claims to be from a hippopotamus. A voice that doesn’t understand the perception of time. A film like no other. Filmmaker Magazine calls it: “a cinematic UFO perched somewhere between hard facts and dreams” and “a work that celebrates imagination as the ultimate means to emancipate ourselves.”
About Studies of the Imagination:
Studies of the Imagination is an in depth conversation about filmmaking with Nelson Carlo de los Santos Arias and UC film professor Mary Leonard. It will focus on Nelson's career and unique approach to making films. This event will be held in the Faculty Enrichment Center, Langsam Library, University of Cincinnati.
