Student Night AWS & CWBA Joint Meeting

This evening is all about the students and how they can become members of these two great societies. The presentations will focus on the many facets of both the CWBA and the AWS — who they are, and what they do.

Both organizations host multiple technical dinner meetings each year centered around the world of welding and fabrication, and often include tours of facilities in and around Edmonton. Membership in these societies allow the students an opportunity to network with welding professionals of all types which is a great way to perhaps meet your future employers!

Presentation Topic: Application of Deep Learning to study metal transfer and voltage behavior in GMAW.

Presented By: J. Eduardo Alvarez-Rocha

Bio: J. Eduardo Alvarez Rocha is a M.Sc. Student in Welding Engineering at the University of Alberta. His research focus is on validating models to create design tools for welding procedure development by understanding arc length behaviour, droplet morphology, and predicting fall voltages across the welding arc. Prior to his M.Sc. studies at the University of Alberta, Eduardo gained over 15 years of experience in the Alberta energy sector focusing on critical welding repairs as part of planned and unplanned maintenance outages. He holds a B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta, a Red Seal Journeyman Certificate in Welding after his studies at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, Pressure Vessel (API 510) and Pressure Piping (API 570) Inspection Certificates from the American Petroleum Industry, Level 2 Welding Inspector Certificate from the Canadian Welding Bureau, Welding Examiner Certificate from the Alberta Boiler Safety Association, and a In-Service Equipment Inspector Certificate from the Alberta Boiler Safety Association.

Presentation Topic: Advancing On-Demand Fabrication: Leveraging Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) in Alberta's Energy Sector

Presented By: Mia Abdulla

Mia Abdulla is an MSc student at the Canadian Centre for Welding and Joining (CCWJ). She recently graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Materials Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2024. Before graduating, she gained experience in product development within the energy sector specifically focusing on wear and corrosion protection using Arc welding technologies. Mia started her research in the fall of 2023 intending to learn more about welding engineering focusing on additive manufacturing techniques. Her research focuses on advancing Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) technologies to be effectively adopted within the Albertan energy sector. In addition to her academic pursuits, Mia is also a part of the University of Alberta's student chapter affiliated with AWS and CWB, as the Vice President.

The cost is $20.00 for Members, $25.00 for Non-Members, and $10 for Students. All members of ASM, ASME, AWS, CWA, NACE, and SME will be charged as members.
