About this Event
This Book Week Scotland (18th- 24th November) join Glasgow Libraries for our citywide packed programme of inspiring, interesting and entertaining bookish events for people of all ages.
This year’s Book Week Scotland theme is Hope, and so we are delighted to welcome Stuart Murdoch, lead singer and songwriter of the popular indie band Belle and Sebastian, to Hillhead Library to discuss his debut autobiographical novel Nobody’s Empire which is inspired by his own experiences of overcoming chronic illness and succeeding in the music industry.
Nobody’s Empire is set in Glasgow in the early 1990s, and features Stephen – a music-loving romantic – who has emerged from a hospital stay, diagnosed with ME/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a little-understood disease. He meets fellow strugglers, for whom the world seems to care less and less, and they form their own support group as they try to navigate their lives.
Starting to write songs, albeit in a slow and fledgling way, Stephen wakes to the possibility of a spiritual and artistic life. Leaving Glasgow in search of the mythic warmth of California, he and his friend Richard float between hostels, sofas and park benches. Could the trip offer them both a new beginning?
