Again a little bit about Stu..
Stu Phillips, owner of B.W.Y Canine Ltd (Wales, UK).
Stu is a multi-award winning search dog instructor with over 24 years working experience.
Having handled and trained working dogs for over twenty four years, Stu Phillips’ operational expertise is second to none. The tobacco detection dogs he has trained have been used all over the UK by Police, Customs and local government law enforcement officers to locate over 30 million pounds-worth of illegal tobacco products and cigarettes.
Two tobacco detection dogs trained and worked by Stuart are the first to receive PDSA Order of Merit medals, which were awarded to Stuart, Scamp and Yoyo by Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh at a ceremony at The Tower of London in October 2024.
During his career, Stuart has worked with dogs in many disciplines including explosive, drugs, firearms, cash, tobacco and mobile phone detection. For two years Stuart assisted UK Border Force in France, working and training live body detection dogs to locate illegal immigrants trying to cross the English Channel on ferries.
Stuart’s law enforcement career began when he joined the Police at 18. In 1999 he then started his dog handler career, training with Military Working Dogs (MWDs) at the British Army’s Defence Animal Centre. Stuart and his last MWD Kiaser competed at the MOD Police & Guarding Agency national dog trials, before leaving to establish his company, B.W.Y Canine Ltd.
Stu and two of his Explosive Detection Dogs (EDDs) Chester and Pip worked at the 2012 London Olympics alongside the Metropolitan Police and British Transport Police, ensuring that Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square and other high-profile London venues and tourist attractions were free from explosive threats.
Since 2013, he has focused on the training of tobacco detection dogs and in 2019 Stu and his search dogs received 3 awards in recognition of their continued operational support to the Police and law enforcement and for disrupting serious and organised crime.
Stu has been a specialist advisor for Interpol and the OECD (Organisation for Economic Corporation and Development) and and regularly travels around Europe to advise on K9 matters. Stuart has also recently been appointed as an International Canine Consultant for the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Co-Operation in Europe).
In 2024 Stuart was the only British detection dog expert to be selected as a judge for the European Customs Detection Dog Championships, which took place in Latvia and hosted by Latvian Customs.
In 2018 Stuart took on the role as an advisor and auditor for the newly formed Wildlife K9 Unit in Indonesia. Working with the international charity Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), Stuart advises and audits the project on everything from kennel construction, handler selection, K9 vehicles right through to K9 training, odour identification and the operational deployment of wildlife detection dog teams at airport and ferry terminals.
The worlds first Whisky Dogs were trained by Stuart, a secret project for one of the worlds largest whisky makers in Scotland. Working in secrecy for over a year, Stu successfully trained two Working Cocker Spaniels to identify odours at levels undetectable to the human nose, but perfectly detectable to a search dog. Rocco who is now a full time whisky dog for Grants Distillery in Scotland is trained to identify imperfections in the wooden casks prior to them being filled with Scotch, one of Scotland’s largest exports.
Stuart has gained an enviable reputation around the world for his operational experience, skills and knowledge of working detection dogs and travels extensively to train and work with various law enforcement agencies, services and groups to share his knowledge and expertise. Stuart very much regards himself as an operator and so his detection dog and handler training differs significantly to other trainers and draws on his many years operational experience as a detection dog handler.
Stuart is based in Wales in the UK, where he has kennels and a training facility to accommodate around 25 dogs. Working Cocker Spaniels and English Springer Spaniels are his breeds of choice for detection dogs, and he supplies both trained and untrained dogs to a number of law enforcement clients in the UK and internationally.
