Street Spirit Reporter Book Club & Happy Hour

Schedule

Mon Jun 29 2026 at 05:00 pm to 07:00 pm

UTC-07:00
Location

North Light | Oakland, CA

Talk homelessness with local reporters, and meet some cool new folks. Your first drink on us ;)
About this Event

Join us for our first reporter book club. We'll talk to Natalie Orenstein of The Oaklandside, whose recent reporting unearthed jarring text messages between Oakland city officials — including former city administrator Jestin Johnson, who has since resigned. We'll get into how Natalie and her co-reporter Eli Wolfe uncovered the messages, and what they teach us about homelessness in Oakland. You can read the stories here, and here.

This will also be a happy hour, where you get the chance to chat with writers, artitsts, readers, and supporters who also love Street Spirit. Drink something refreshing! Soothe your existential dread by making a friend! See you there <3

WHAT TO EXPECT

  • North Light is a cocktail bar, so this event will be 21+
  • Arrive at 5:00 and meet us in the back (your first cocktail or NA drink is on us). We'll start the conversation at 5:30.
  • We'll be seated outside in their back patio
  • North Light has a kitchen, so you can order something to eat if you get hungry.
  • Mingle with our team and the rad network of readers and contributors who make Street Spirit so great
  • Head home around 7:00
  • This event is free. You don't need a ticket, but please RSVP so we know you're coming!
  • North Light is ADA accessible, including the bathroom, but getting through the bar to the back patio can be a bit of a squeeze. If you want us to meet you out front to escort you back, shoot us an email: [email protected]

I CAN'T COME BUT I WANT TO SUPPORT STREET SPIRIT

If you want to support our work, you can do so online here.

ABOUT STREET SPIRIT

is an independent, monthly newspaper that has been dedicated to covering poverty and homelessness since 1995. We are also a vital source of income for the homeless people who sell our paper on the streets of Berkeley, Oakland, and beyond. More than just a newspaper, Street Spirit provides a platform for art making in historically marginalized communities, and breaks down harmful stigmas that make it impossible to build effective solutions to homelessness.
