About this Event

Join us for a guided Nature Walk tailored to highlight aspects of Cylburn’s lovely grounds and gardens that invite you to slow down, look closely, and rediscover the textures that we may otherwise take for granted as part of our natural landscape. As we walk, we’ll practice mindful observation, noticing the tiny moments and patterns we usually pass by. The tour encourages a deeper awareness of our natural environment—while Cylburn’s Education Director and Pratt staff facilitate creative ideation through natural facts and friendly collaboration.

Participants will learn simple techniques for creating texture impressions. They will press clay onto surfaces to make temporary stamps and ink them to reveal small details, and create rubbings by placing paper over textured objects and burnishing with graphite, charcoal, or crayon. From tree bark and leaves to stone surfaces, moss, seed pods, footprints, and other often-overlooked surfaces, we’ll use these everyday materials to create lasting impressions of our natural landscape.

And be sure to join us in April as we kick off this creative journey in the Historic Mt. Vernon neighborhood, exploring the textures, patterns, and often overlooked details of urban in a companion program -- click here for more information. You do not need to attend the nature program to participate in the city program—everyone is welcome to join either or both experiences.

Note: This program includes a leisurely walk of roughly 1 mile, across varied terrain. Please be sure to wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and footwear.

All supplies and materials will be provided.
