Our Stream Teams have been hard at work in the field collecting aquatic insects and snails - or macroinvertebrates - from local streams and rivers. Now it's time for us to identify these small critters! Join us for Identification Day at St. Clair County Community College on Thursday, November 21 from 11 am-1 pm. With the aid of microscopes, we'll examine the tiny creatures that spend most of their lives underwater. Some of these macroinvertebrates are very sensitive to pollution and are only found living in clean, healthy water. Others are more tolerant to pollution and can live in degraded streams. When we identify the bugs a stream is able to support, we can give the stream health a score such as "excellent" or "poor".
This event is held in the CEM Building (Clara E McKenzie) on SC4's campus on the 2nd floor in Room 213.
Identification Day is geared toward folks ages 8 and older, and registration is requested. Email Education Manager, Melissa, at [email protected] to register for this event or to learn more.
Details at www.scriver.org.
The event is in partnership with St. Clair County Community College.
