Introducing: StrathWrites

Whether you’re a seasoned author or absolute beginner, StrathWrites is open to all Strathclyders (staff, students and alumni) keen to galvanise their creative writing practice. Celebrating the 60-year anniversary of Strathclyde’s Royal Charter, the series offers events prompted by the questions that matter to us. Who are we? What does it mean to be a Strathclyder in 2024? How can we be more confident in expressing ourselves and ideas in writing?

Involving a mix of author talks, readings, Q&As, discussion and writing workshops, StrathWrites aims to provide a welcoming space for thinking across disciplines and levels of study. The sessions will be loosely structured and informal, designed around themes that define the ambitious and people-oriented values of Strathclyde. There may be space for collaboration, but sharing work is always optional.

StrathWrites is a cross-faculty platform, hosted by staff in the Institute of Education, Humanities and Social Sciences and the student-run Strathclyde Book club. It is kindly supported by the Strathclyde Jubilee Engagement Fund.

No sessions require advance preparation. Simply bring yourself and your preferred writing tools. All rooms we are using are accessible by wheelchair.

If you have further questions about the series or how we can support your attendance, please email [email protected].

More info about Strathclyde's Diamond Jubilee celebrations can be found here.

Session 3: An Afternoon with Debi Gliori

We will hear a reading from Debi Gliori followed by a Q&A and workshop.

About the author

Debi Gliori is the award-winning writer and illustrator of over eighty picture books and novels for children of all ages, including the bestselling modern classic No Matter What (Bloomsbury) and the Mr Bear series (Orchard). Her picture book about depression, Night Shift (Templar), was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. She is also author of the Little Owl series of books, illustrated by Alison Brown, for Bloomsbury. Debi lives near Edinburgh and has twice been writer-in-residence in the Shetland Isles. Her favourite colour is blue or, more precisely, four different shades of blue: cerulean blue, cobalt blue, Mediterranean turquoise blue and warm ultramarine blue. She has sold over 600,000 books in the UK alone.

This session is led by Jenny Carey.

Jenny Carey is a Senior Teaching Fellow in the Institute for Education. She is a core member of the Early Years and Literacy Team at Strathclyde. She works with Early Years Professionals and Teachers to develop early years and/or literacy pedagogy to support and enhance practice.
