Looking to connect with other writers in Stratford? Join Stratford Writes for their monthly Writer's Meeting at The Bunker.
This is a relaxed, welcoming space where writers of all levels come together to exchange ideas, share work, and talk about the craft. Each month features a different theme or speaker, covering topics like character development, historical research, writing goals, publishing tips, and more.
Whether you're a published author or just getting started, you're invited to take part. Come out for drinks, meet local writers, and join in on lively discussions about writing.

This month's meeting celebrates the launch of Totem, the debut novel from BAFTA Cymru-winning screenwriter and best-selling author Matthew Hall, and features a live Indigenous flute performance by Ojibway artist Red George (Jeffrey George, Ma-Mi-No-ga-boo) of Kettle and Stoney Point First Nation. The evening also includes a Q&A session.

About Matthew Hall
Matthew Hall is a screenwriter and novelist based on the border of England and Wales. After training as a barrister and practising law in London, he turned to writing for television, going on to produce more than 60 hours of prime-time UK drama over a 30-year career. His series Wing and a Prayer earned a BAFTA nomination, and he won a BAFTA Cymru in 2018 for Keeping Faith.

His fiction has earned considerable recognition as well. His debut novel, The Coroner, was shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger in 2009, and his fourth novel, The Flight, received the same honour in 2012.

Totem, his latest novel, marks a new direction: set largely in British Columbia, it introduces lawyer Jessie Cunningham and is the first book in a planned series.

About Red George
Jeffrey (Red) George, known by his Ojibway name Ma-Mi-No-ga-boo ("He who stands with the light of the Creator"), is a visual artist and musician from Kettle and Stoney Point First Nation, situated along the shores of Lake Huron in Ontario.

Red George comes from a family of artists spanning painting, sculpture, beading, and music. His own practice took root in childhood, sparked by a drawing he encountered around age seven or eight, a portrait of an Elder rendered in the Native style that set him on a path he has described as both creative and deeply personal. Working primarily in acrylic on canvas, he paints in the Woodland style, a tradition influenced by Norval Morrisseau, and speaks of his process as a connection between mind, heart, and spirit.

His work hangs in private homes and public galleries across North America and beyond, and he has shared his art through workshops, school visits, and community paint nights. In 2019, his environmental work with the Port Franks Optimists earned him a Good Neighbour Award.
This evening, he brings his music, performing on the Native flute.

Free admission. Doors at 7PM.
