Storytime with Summer

Storytime with Summer is Under the Umbrella's newest youth activity! Come enjoy an engaging reading of a children's book at 2 pm and the first chapter or two of a middle grade book at 2:30 pm. We will be sitting in the childrens section of the bookstore on rugs and youth chairs, or the cafe depending on the crowd. There will be a snack and sticker provided for all youth that attend.

Every month, there will be new books chosen from the shelves of Under the Umbrella with a focus on BIPOC or disabled authors/stories.

RSVP is encouraged to help gauge attendance and supplies.

What kids can expect:

• An introduction and warm welcome from Summer
• A moment to get group wiggles out before settling in to listen quietly
• A snack to enjoy during the reading
• An engaging reading of a pre-selected book by Summer
• A moment to ask what their favorite part was and what they learned
• A special sticker for quietly enjoying reading time

What parents can expect:

• 30 minutes of focused time for their kids in a safe space
• Education from books about LGBTQ+ themes including diverse parent dynamics, pronouns and expression, and learning about the world around them
• A gluten/dairy/nut free snack for their child during the activity
• A safe queer adult from their community with experience hosting youth events, clean background check, and prior experience working in childcare
• A discount on a book from the children's or middle grade section of the store on the day of the event!

About the Reader:

Summer Falkenrath (they/them) is a queer nonbinary bookseller at Under the Umbrella. They host a free Queer Youth Art Night once a month in Ogden and at Under the Umbrella. They enjoy helping kids learn, answering the endless questions kids have, and providing a safe space for kids to express themselves. You can find Summer at @FalkenrathBooks
