Award-winning journalist and author Nadia Salomon joins us for a special storytime event! Nadia will read from her new picture book, A Voice of Hope , which honors the remarkable life of civil rights hero Myrlie Evers-Williams. Nadia's lyrical text paired with London Ladd's beautiful artwork tell the story of Myrlie and her message of hope, from fighting against Jim Crow laws and championing voting rights, to fulfilling her dream of performing at Carnegie Hall.
Following her reading, Nadia will answer questions and sign books!
This event will be held in our third floor studio. Tickets for storytime are free, but registration is required as we have a limited number of seats available.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
Myrlie Evers-Williams’ voice is gentle yet strong, soft yet powerful.
It is a soaring song of hope. Myrlie’s voice didn’t start out that way. She was born into the segregated South and the beautiful brown color of her skin made her a target for hate. It meant she didn’t have the same opportunities as white children, and that meant her dream of playing music onstage one day would be harder to achieve. But this didn’t stop Myrlie. As she grew, she marched for equal rights alongside her husband and activist, Medgar Evers. She fought against Jim Crow laws and for voting rights. She became the chair of the NAACP, and finally she realized her dream of performing at Carnegie Hall. After that, as a voice for hope and change, Myrlie spoke at President Obama’s second inauguration, inspiring a nation.
Nadia Salomon’s lyrical text and London Ladd’s exquisite artwork honor and celebrate the legendary life of Myrlie Evers-Williams and share her message of hope with the world.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Nadia Salomon is a #PitMad Success Story and award-winning author of GOODNIGHT GANESHA, which is a Bank Street Best Book, ALSC DIA Selection, and #NCTEWow book. She is also the author of A VOICE OF HOPE: THE MYRLIE EVERS WILLIAMS STORY, the first picture book biography ever written about the iconic civil rights activist. Her third picture book, A RAKHI FOR RAKESH, is a heartwarming story about sibling rivalry set against the Hindu holiday, Raksha Bandhan. She writes on themes of South Asian and Caribbean culture, STEM, nonfiction, and humor. Nadia is an award-winning journalist and holds a journalism degree from Emerson College. When not participating in her own goodnight rituals or spinning silly yarns... you'll find her working closely with SCBWI, 12x12 Challenge, Kids Comics Unite, and Storyteller Academy.
