Anne Shelby’s store of stories is stocked with old tales, and her ways of telling them are steeped in the language, history, and humor of Appalachian Kentucky. But there are surprises in store, too, when the long ago and far away suddenly, like magic, lands in the here and now.
Anne Shelby’s storytelling began with stories heard on porches, under shade trees, at family reunions and at her grandparents’ country store. Anne grew up in Southeastern Kentucky, in families and communities which, while they no longer told the old European fairy tales, maintained a strong oral tradition in local legends, “haint” tales, family and personal experience stories, in their delight in stories, and in their ways of telling them. For decades, Shelby has told Appalachian and world folk tales at libraries, schools and festivals. As a Kentucky Humanities Chautauqua character, she performs as coal camp union organizer and folksinger Aunt Molly Jackson. In addition to writing plays and newspaper columns, Shelby has published ten books, including The Man Who Lived in a Hollow Tree, a picture book based on an Eastern Kentucky legend passed down in her family, and The Adventures of Molly Whuppie and Other Appalachian Folktales, which won an American Folklore Society Aesop Accolade. A member of the Kentucky Storytelling Association, Anne lives near Oneida in Clay County.
