Stories from Below Bear Mountain: Arvin, Lamont, and Weedpatch w/ Author Ruth Leon Barba

At the southernmost end of California’s Central Valley lie Arvin, Lamont, and Weedpatch. Although each area is distinct, their histories are intertwined. The Yokuts were in the area
for thousands of years, followed by Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. settlers. The first seeds of Arvin, Lamont, and Weedpatch were planted in the late 1800s. Over the years, agriculture became a central part of the economy and attracted people from all walks of life. The Dust Bowl and Mexican migrations left an impact on the area that is visible to this day.
Join Author and Educator, Ruth Leon Barba; who grew up in Arvin and graduated from Cal State Bakersfield with a focus in political science and history, for this very special talk highlighting the culture and development of Arvin, Lamont, and Weedpatch. ABOUT THE BOOK: Comprising 128 pages filled with photographs, Borba's Images of America series book titled, Arvin, Lamont, and Weedpatch, showcases personal narratives and experiences that celebrate the cultural and social history of the region. Ms. Barba selected the best images from the Arvin Historical Society, Dust Bowl Foundation, private and public collections, as well as interviewed many local community members for the book.
