About this Event
Some areas of London seem to be veritable hot spots for ghostly encounters. This walk explores one such place – the heart of old Stoke Newington – to consider how the past seems to continue into the present in ways we are yet to understand.
Many of the events I describe happened quite recently and were related to me by those who experienced them or trusted third parties. The stories relate to people who lived, worked and died in the area, both during the period when Stokey was a small rural village and after its transformation into an innner city suburb. We will explore the local historical context and consider which theories might best fit.
The walk takes a good 2 hours. Please arrive five minutes early as I will be setting off on time. We will meander slowly west from our meeting place outside the Fire Station on Stoke Newington Church Street, ending at the Elizabethan St Mary's Old Churchyard.
I walk in (almost) all weathers, so please come prepared! The terrain is mostly flat, with a few uneven and dark surfaces, and one busy road to cross. Recommended age: 15+.
Meet me in front of the Fire Station on Stoke Newington Church Street (between Fleetwood Street and Abney Park Cemetery, see map and pic below).
For information about my other North London ghost walks and Hidden Stokey walks, please visit: www.storiesofourstreets.com. I alternative this walk with the Newington Green Ghost Walk which surveys the south of Stoke Newington area and surrounds.
I look forward to walking with you on my serious ghost walks - for the seriously curious!
