About this Event

Workshop Overview

Stitching Stories is a hands-on sewing workshop designed to explore the historical, cultural, and artistic significance of sewing within Black communities. Timed for Black History Month, the workshop invites participants to engage directly with textile traditions that have served as tools of survival, storytelling, economic empowerment, and creative expression across generations.

Participants will learn basic hand-sewing techniques while gaining insight into how sewing, particularly quilting, garment making, and textile arts, has played a vital role in preserving Black history and identity. This workshop transforms history from something observed into something experienced.

Participants will:

  • Learn foundational hand-sewing techniques suitable for beginners
  • Understand the historical role of sewing in Black communities
  • Explore sewing as a form of storytelling, self-expression, and mindfulness
  • Create a small sewn piece that reflects personal meaning or narrative
  • Connect history, creativity, and cultural legacy through hands-on practice

Skill Level: Beginner-friendly; no prior sewing experience required

All materials will be provided by the facilitator
