Still Ill is a Kansas City-based band featuring Ricky Reyes (vocals/guitar), Jen Kean (guitar/vocals), Dom Zappia (bass), and Eric Jones (drums). The band plays a mix of shoegaze texture and post-hardcore intensity, with sparking leads, grinding guitars, and melodic basslines. Their sound is often described as dynamic and engaging, balancing beauty with raw power and drawing from influences like the 1962 movie Beat Girl.
Violenteer is an Omaha-area band formed in 2021 by brothers Randy and Barry Cotton, along with drummer Eric Ebers. The band was created during the COVID-19 pandemic to offer an innovative take on a dark and confusing world, featuring former Season to Risk member Steve Tulipana. The trio occasionally incorporates other musicians for recording and live shows, adding layers of mod-synth, samples, lap-steel, and guitar to their innovative music.
There’s something distinctively collaborative about making a vinyl compilation album in 2025. Vinyl record listening is a format that demands communal engagement. There are no earbuds, bluetooth, portabilitily or isolation in the vinyl experience. From the moment the needle drops, waves of vibration spill out from the stylus into the air. Particular amplifiers, snaking audio cables, and dedicated Hi-Fi equipment are required to activate the listening experience. It’s a ritual that demands attention, defined by the coordination and collaborative efforts of so many links in a chain.
This compilation encapsulates this mode of collaboration. It starts with the natural community of the individuals sharing physical space on a permanent record. Each recording includes past bandmates, tourmates, local repair technicians, studio engineers, and longtime friends. Putting together music for vinyl requires a high level of trust. There are many steps in the preparation and much expense. Releasing vinyl is a commitment to fight together through all the obstacles, and create, not just a “sound file,” but a full listening experience. In a moment when it is increasingly easy, and nearly free, to post songs online or generate a “playlist”, Vinyl Vagabonds embrace the care, the thoughtfulness, and the mystique of sharing physical and aural space in a musical collection.
We appreciate your participation in this ritual. We hope you hear the care embedded in these tracks. These songs have traveled long and far, passing through the ether of ideas, materialized through practice spaces, studios, and manufacturing plants, to finally arrive on your turntable.
