“My work is about reclaiming agency. It is about giving voice and liberation to what was repressed and silenced.” Described by Sasha Geffen as "Best Feminist Rock n' Roll Exorcism," SHE SPEAKS IN TONGUES is artist, vocalist, performer Kate McCandless. Armed with body, voice, and a fierce, shamanic energy, SHE SPEAKS IN TONGUES often lures with nostalgia - simultaneously embracing and questioning its comfort and authority with a dark, feminist bent. McCandless creates and performs her work solo, and in collaboration with other musicians. The effect is jarring, haunting, and a cathartic call to healing. A transplant from Chicago since 2020, McCandless now calls Kansas CIty her creative home base.

A word from Kate McCandless about
SHE SPEAKS IN TONGUES submits: SUPPOSED FORMER INFATUATION JUNKIE//Alanis Morissette
Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie is my favorite Alanis Morissette album, save the iconic and formative Jagged Little Pill we all know and love. I feel like Junkie doesn't get enough play and credit as the dark, verbose, journey into the underworld and out the other side that it is. Written after the rocketship success of Jagged, Alanis curled into herself, reconciling success and identity, mental health crisis and healing. This performance is not a performance of the album in its entirety, but intended to showcase the album's particular focus on facing one's demons and healing. I think it's interesting that the album's radio hits include the more saccharine Thank You, the confessional, stripped down Unsent, and the pop forward So Pure. Alanis has a lot to say on this album, the majority of which was bypassed by the radio hits. Alanis bares her soul so vulnerably, so articulately, so raw. She exposes an inner world most women aren't brave enough to face nor expose. I wanted to crawl inside that and center it, highlight it. As with all my projects, this performance has an intention of healing, catharsis, and call to action. My hope is that the experience will indulge our nostalgia while also questioning it; engage with something familiar while also discovering something new.
I am pleased and honored to feature artists Mitzi McKee on this project. Her presence, musicianship, and vocals truly make this project complete. I am pleased to welcome back musicians/collaborators Matt Richey and Brian Robinson; and welcome Alex Yoffie, Drew Black to the band for Junkie.
