Stewardship Saturday: A Walk through the Marshes with Cafe Ohlone
Schedule
Sat Feb 22 2025 at 09:00 am to 01:00 pm
UTC-08:00Location
Coyote Hills Regional Park Visitor Center | Fremont, CA
About this Event
Join Cafe Ohlone co-founders and chefs Vincent Medina and Louis Trevino and The Marine Mammal Center as we take a walk through the marshes, build our own miniature tule boats, and taste some pickleweed. Learn about Ohlone language, culture, and history; how the Ohlone people use shoreline plants; and the importance of diversifying our diet and material choices to support humans and animals long term. Our hope is that you leave this event knowing more about Ohlone culture, as well as what you can do to conserve local ecosystems and traditions.
We can sign for Community Service hours if you need us to!
Free lunch and snacks will be provided
Accessibility notes:
- 1 hour walk around the marshes (mostly paved, fairly flat)
- Working with hands to create a mini tule boat
- Opportunity to taste pickleweed (but not mandatory)
Parking notes:
- Free parking passes will be provided upon arrival to the event.
- Driver note: Adult drivers of youth are welcome to drop youth off and come back at the end of the event, or explore the local area during this time. We do ask that youth attend the events without adults to allow for opportunities to meet others interested in conservation. All organization staff are certified to work with youth.
- If the weather is nice, the Coyote Hills parking lot may fill up. Please anticipate extra time to re-enter the park for pickup if you plan to leave the park while your youth is at the event.
Primary language event will be spoken in: English (the Café Ohlone team will also be sharing about the Chochenyo and Rumsen languages)
