IF you are in the Palm Springs area in the sunny month of June be sure to visit on June 4th this special exhibit about legendary photographer/filmmaker, Steven Arnold. I personally knew and worked with Steven on projects It was magical, literally. This event starts at 6:00 in the Annenberg Museum.Step into a world of cinematic dreams when Palm Springs Art Museum, in collaboration with Del Vaz Projects, presents Steven Arnold’s Nocturnal Dream Show, an evening of visionary short films inspired by the life and work of filmmaker and artist Steven Arnold (1943–1994). The program complements the museum’s current exhibition, A Queer Arcana: Art, Magic, and Spirit.
Originally launched by Arnold at San Francisco’s Palace Theatre in 1968, the Nocturnal Dream Shows became legendary midnight gatherings that blurred the boundaries between film, performance, fantasy, and underground culture. Curated by Arnold alongside filmmaker Sebastian, the screenings mixed experimental cinema, early animation, and classic films with avant-garde live performances, including appearances by the iconic Cockettes.
Reviving the spirit of those groundbreaking events, Palm Springs Art Museum and Del Vaz Projects will present a curated selection of films featured in the original Nocturnal Dream Shows, alongside contemporary works that echo Arnold’s imaginative vision. The evening is part of the museum’s popular Free Thursday Night programming, inviting audiences to experience a celebration of queer creativity, artistic experimentation, and cinematic wonder.
