Built in 1882, The Crown Point jail was considered escape-proof, but on March 3, 1934, gangster John Dillinger proved otherwise with a daring escape. Arrested in Tucson, Arizona, in January for a bank robbery in East Chicago that led to Detective William Patrick O'Malley's death, Dillinger was extradited to Indiana on January 28 and jailed in Crown Point.
Legend says Dillinger either carved a wooden gun or obtained a real one, and used it to lock up 14 jailers, including the Warden. He escaped with a fellow prisoner and two hostages, crossing into Illinois in a sheriff's car. The hostages were released unharmed. Dillinger was later killed by FBI agents on July 22 outside the Biograph Theatre in Chicago.
