Stephen Walker, Carver County Veteran Service Officer

Steve retired with over 20 years in the Minnesota Army National Guard, where he deployed 3 times; in 2005, 2011 and 2021 to Iraq, Kuwait and most recently as one of the last troops in Afghanistan during the pull-out. His service also included providing security during the Republican National Convention, Emergency Response mission for former President Obama’s inauguration, and assisting State Police officers respond to the George Floyd Riots. He finished his career as First Sergeant for Alpha Company 1-194 out of Sauk Centre, MN where he was responsible for the welfare, training and personnel of over 60 soldiers in his company. During his service he was awarded 5 ARCOMs one with C device for combat, 3 Army Achievement Medals and various State awards for service. While he was still serving in the National Guard, he also worked as a Veteran Service Officer for the Veterans of Foreign Wars Claims Office; where he assisted veterans with their claims to the VA for compensation, pension, education benefits and healthcare benefits. He spent 8 years with the VFW claims office advocating for veterans and their families all the way to Board of Veterans Appeals as needed. This time advocating for veterans and their families led him to his current role as the County Veteran Service Officer for Carver County. He took over the role in July of 2023, where he continues to advocate for veterans and their families here in Carver.
