Sourced from the Stephen King novella “The Body,” which was collected in the 1982 book Different Seasons (the same tome that houses “Rita Hayworth & the Shawshank Redemption”), Rob Reiner’s Stand by Me is one of many King adaptations that show his talents outside of his usual wheelhouse of horror. Told as a lengthy flashback to 1959 as our characters come of age, a group of four teenagers (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O’Connell) hear of a dead body found, but not yet reported, a lengthy walk away from their homes, so they decide to lie about their whereabouts and set out to go see it. The film struggles with death on the surface—quest to see the dead body aside, the boys are troubled by the death of an older brother (John Cusack)—and this all becomes more poignant in light of breakout star Phoenix’s untimely death in 1993 at the age of 23.
