Cataract Gorge Cultural Walk – Experience Overview
Join Aboriginal cultural practitioner Djuker Willis Hart for an immersive cultural walking experience through the beautiful Cataract Gorge. This Aboriginal-led tour offers participants the opportunity to learn about culture, country, and traditional knowledge while exploring one of Lutruwita/Tasmania’s most iconic landscapes.
Tour Details:
Start Time: 11:00 AM
Meeting Point: BBQ area to the left as you enter from the main car park at Cataract Gorge
Duration: Approximately 2 hours
The Cultural Walk Experience:
The cultural walk begins with an Acknowledgement of Country, setting the tone for a respectful and meaningful experience on Country. Participants will then take part in a guided walk through the Gorge basin, learning about the cultural history and significance of the area.
Throughout the walk, guests will gain insight into:
-Aboriginal connections to Country
-Native flora and fauna and their traditional uses
-Practical, medicinal, edible, and cultural plant knowledge
-Seasonal indicators and environmental understanding
-Participants will also have the opportunity to taste native foods that are in season and available at the time of the tour.
Traditional Cultural Activities:
During the experience, guests can engage in hands-on cultural learning through a selection of traditional craft workshops, including:
Friction fire workshop
Rope making workshop
Lomandra fish trap making workshop
These activities provide a practical introduction to traditional skills and cultural practices.
Cultural Demonstrations:
The tour also includes a show and tell of cultural items, sharing stories and explanations of their traditional uses and significance, along with a didgeridoo demonstration.
