"Why use five colors when 50 will do nicely?" Randy Darwall
In this two session class we will learn about mixing textures, fibers, colors, and varying thicknesses of yarns to create a mixed warp scarf from yarns in your stash. You can use full balls of yarn or small amounts of leftovers to create a gorgeous scarf.
The first session we will play with our yarns. You will learn to sort using color theory and consider different attributes of your yarn. You’ll learn a little about mixing colors, textures, and fibers and how to do it successfully. Then, you have a week to think about other yarns in your stash you didn't bring with you. Trading yarns with other students will work too. If you don't have enough stash, go to the creative reuse stores like Scrap it Up in Pleasant Ridge or Indigo Hippo in Over the Rhine. Discount bins at Michaels or Joann and thrift stores can also be a source. You can always visit them after the first class as well to supplement what you chose from your stash.
The second session, you will bring your rigid heddle loom and warping supplies. We will take our chosen yarns to the loom and learn to warp by designing in the reed with a modified direct warping technique and begin weaving with your chosen weft. You will finish weaving and finishing the scarf on your own at home.
Supplies to Bring:
- Session 1: A good amount of varied balls, skeins (full or partial), and leftovers of yarn, of any fiber content in as many colors as you have. Variegated and solids, different thicknesses, and novelty yarns are all great to use. Thin yarns can be doubled in the heddle. Metallics or other novelty yarns can add a pop. You can't bring too much.
- Session 2: Your chosen yarns and a Rigid Heddle loom with a minimum 8 inch weaving width, a 7.5 or an 8-dent heddle, and all of the necessary supplies you use when warping (warping peg, clamps, shuttles, warp separating paper or sticks, scissors, rubber bands, darning needle.) You need your own Rigid Heddle Loom for session 2. Guild members may borrow one from the guild.
- Bring a snack and beverages if you wish on both days. A refrigerator and microwave are available.
