Konferences uzmanības centrā ir jautājumi, kas pievēršas okupācijas laika pieminekļiem un ar tiem saistītajai problemātikai nesenās pagātnes kultūras mantojuma kontekstā – pieminekļiem ne tikai kā pagājušās varas nospiedumiem, bet arī materiālā un nemateriālā mantojuma un okupācijas laika vēstures liecībām, kas iesaistāmi vēstures skaidrošanas un aktualizēšanas procesā. Varbūt iespējams pieminekļus nevis aizvākt, bet iesaistīt publiskā komunikācijā par totalitārisma režīmu, mainīt to kontekstu un piešķirt jaunas nozīmes? Kādi pieminekļi mums ir vajadzīgi šodien un kāpēc?
Trīs dienu programmā būs astoņas sesijas, kas veltītas okupācijas laika pieminekļu polemikai un rekontekstualizācijai, kultūras atmiņas un dekoloniālisma jautājumiem, pieminekļiem kā sarežģītās pagātnes, atšķirīgu atmiņu un pretrunīgu naratīvu atceres vietām, postsociālisma identitātes un atmiņas veidošanai, rakstnieku un mākslinieku lomai padomju okupācijas laikā, kā arī pieminekļu pārinterpretācijai laikmetīgajā mākslā.
Konference noslēdzošajā dienā, sadarbībā ar Latvijas Laikmetīgās mākslas centru notiks performatīva pastaiga "Neērtie pieminekļi". Tajā performatīvas intervences pilsētvidē veidos Gundega Evelone, Tanels Randers, Ivars Drulle, Marija Kapajeva un Jāna Koko. Mākslinieki kartēs pilsētu caur pieminekļiem, kas mūsdienās nokļuvuši polarizētu viedokļu krustugunīs par to, ko darīt ar šo mantojumu, un aicinās ieraudzīt kompleksāku ainu nekā pauž politiskie un ideoloģiskie argumenti par tiem. The conference will focus on issues related to monuments from the occupation period and the context of recent cultural heritage – monuments not only as remnants of a past regime, but also as tangible and intangible heritage of the Soviet era and historical witnesses of the occupation period, which can be part of the process of explaining and actualizing history. Perhaps it is possible not to remove these monuments, but to involve them in public discourse on totalitarian regimes, to recontextualize them, and to give them new meanings? What kinds of monuments do we need today and why?
The three-day program will include eight sessions devoted to the discussions and recontextualization of monuments from the occupation period, issues of cultural memory and decolonization, monuments as sites of difficult pasts, divergent memories, and contradictory narratives, the formation of post-socialist identity and memory, the role of writers and artists during the Soviet occupation, and the reinterpretation of monuments in contemporary art.
On the final day of the conference, in collaboration with the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art, everyne is invited to a performative walk Uncomfortable Monuments. During the walk, performative interventions will be created by the artists Gundega Evelone, Tanel Rander, Ivars Drulle, Maria Kapajeva, and Jaana Kokko. The artists will map the city through monuments that have become the subject of polarized opinions about what to do with this heritage, and they will invite us to see a more complex picture than that expressed by political and ideological arguments about them.
