Luke Skywalker begins a journey that will change the galaxy in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977).Nineteen years after the formation of the evil Galactic Empire, Luke is thrust into the struggle of the Rebel Alliance when he meets Obi-Wan Kenobi, who has lived for years in seclusion on the desert planet of Tatooine. Obi-Wan begins Luke’s Jedi training as Luke joins him on a daring mission to rescue Rebel leader Princess Leia from the clutches of Darth Vader and the evil Empire.
Frustrated by loss of image quality when trying to manipulate standard 35mm film negatives for special effects, George Lucas and cinematographer Richard Edlund turned to VistaVision to achieve the film's ground-breaking special effects. The process, originally introduced in the 1950s, had been rendered somewhat obsolete by further advances in film technology. However, the additional space provided by VistaVision's horizontal film recording process produced a remarkably high-quality film image that could be more easily manipulated in post-production. The original Star Wars won a total of eleven Academy Awards, including for Best Visual Effects, Best Art Director, and Best Picture.
