Star Party

Bring a blanket or portable chairs for an evening of star gazing and planet-watching.
Explore the night sky with the San Antonio Astronomical Association. Amateur astronomers will bring a variety of telescopes to view planets, star clusters, nebulae, and much more. Bring your own telescope or binoculars, or enjoy the sights from one of the SAAA’s telescopes. This is not a formal program but you'll have plenty of opportunities to engage with experts, learn about celestial objects, and learn the basics of telescope operation. Come ready to ask lots of questions!
Who is invited:
Open to all ages; participants under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. No pets please.
Where to meet:
Park in Lot A or B and walk the short distance to Parking Lot C where the telescopes will be set up. Set up chairs or a blanket in the grassy median or at the edge of the parking lot. Please bring a flashlight!
Accessibility:
This is a stationary activity in Parking Lot C (paved surface). To limit disruptive light at the telescopes, event parking is near the Visitor Center in Lot A or B for most, with a less-than 0.5-mile walk to Lot C to join the event. If you need to park in Lot C, alert staff and we will make arrangements.
If ADA assistance is required, please request modifications by emailing [email protected] at least 30 days in advance.
How to prepare:
Dress for the weather. Bring water, snacks if you like, and your own flashlight for the walk. Flashlights can only be used near the telescopes with a red lens cover.
Registration is NOT required. Though the activity is free, entrance fees to the Natural Area do apply. We often fill to capacity. To ensure entrance and save time at the Fee Booth, please pre-purchase and print out a day pass. Day passes can be reserved beginning one month before the date of your visit.
Cancellation:
This program is weather-dependent and subject to cancellation, especially if clouds will prevent viewing. Check trail conditions by calling GCSNA's main office at 210-688-9055, or go to the GCSNA webpage, Instagram, or Facebook.
