Stained Glass Pattern Making Class

If you already have some experience working with stained glass, but want to learn how to make your own patterns, this class is for you!

We will complete 2 practice designs by hand drawing - an apple and a cat face - based on photos. Afterward, we will branch off into our own individual designs. Come with a design in mind for your own pattern project during our work hour. A photo or sketch will be helpful to start us in a direction of a pattern.

We will talk about the limitations of glass and how to work around challenging details. We will explore methods of drawing by hand (or digitally if you have your own device), how to resize without special equipment, and making copies. The studio also has a subscription to Rapid Resizer and will provide all class participants with one print out of their design to any requested dimensions. We will also discuss methods of cutting your pattern.

After our pattern making class is over, guests from the class are invited to enjoy 50% off all tool rentals for the duration of your project during open studio hours to make your new window from the pattern you created! Consumable materials are not included (glass, foil, solder, lead, zinc) but are available locally and online.

Materials included for this pattern making class include paper, pencils, sharpies, scissors and pattern shears. Light pads for tracing photos on hand as well. Use of a projector and paper for large scale resizing, and a printer with tape for easy resizing on Google Docs with no special software. We also have Rapid Resizer.

This class is led by Krista Gordhamer of The Artery Studio. Krista has 20 years of stained glass expereince, 5 years experience as a formal art educator, and 3 years of stained glass instructional experience at The Artery Studio. The Artery Studio features any tool you could need to complete your new pattern in studio from 3 different styles of glass scorers, breaking tools, grinders, saws, soldering irons, specialty tools including the Beetle Bits, Score1, and Cutters Mate, and a zinc came bender.
