It is remarkable to think that 100 years ago, this community of faith gathered for worship for the first time on these grounds. Much has changed since then. The building, the neighborhood, even the people in the pews have changed. But from the beginning, St. John’s Royal Oak has been a beloved community of faith, seeking to love God, love one another, and love our neighbors.
Over the years, this parish has faced challenges, transitions, joys, and new beginnings. The fact that we are still here today is a testimony to the goodness of God, and to the gift we have been
to one another across generations. That deserves to be celebrated.
The Vestry has appointed a team to help lead the planning and execution of our centennial celebrations. That team includes Mary Fairman, Kate Weide, Ann Marie Pinwonski, Emma Bruns, Sandy Curtis, and Mary Gilhuly. They have chosen longtime St. John’s member Jennifer Taub to serve as chair.
They are already off to a strong start. At their first meeting, they secured the date for our main 100th celebration.
Please mark your calendars. Our central celebration will be Sunday, October 18, with one combined service at 9:30 a.m. Because this will be such a meaningful day in the life of our parish, we extended an invitation to the Bishop of the Diocese of Michigan, the Right Reverend Bonnie Perry. We are delighted to share that Bishop Perry has already confirmed that she will be with us to celebrate.
This will be a day to give thanks for our past, rejoice in who we are today, and look with hope toward the future God is preparing for St. John’s.
We ask for your gracious presence. Please spread the word to your St. John’s friends, former members, neighbors, and anyone who has been touched by this community. Let us gather, celebrate, and give thanks together.
