St. Brigid, Ireland's patron saint, founded the first Irish monastery. Legend tells of her calming a dying pagan chieftain by weaving a cross from rushes. This act, explaining the cross's symbolism, led to his conversion.
Traditionally made from rushes or straw on St. Brigid's Day (February 1st), the cross is believed to protect homes from evil. Its distinctive design has become a popular symbol in Irish culture, featured in jewelry and other gifts.
