The SSO is pulling out all the stops for our 60th Season; we have programmed the masterful Brahms Symphony No. 4 to kick things off! This symphony is a work of deep emotion and feeling that will take you on a journey from deeply peaceful music to a thrilling and huge ending. Brahms is representative of a certain branch of Romantic 19th century music, so we decided to include the complete opposite branch of Romantic music and have an overture by Wagner, from his opera Tannhäuser. There’s a connection between these two extremes, Wagner and Brahms, but you’ll have to come to the concert to find out about it! Also on the concert, a lovely overture by the composer who invented the stand-alone concert overture, Felix Mendelssohn. Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage is a work of early Romantic music from the mold of Beethoven that will set the stage for the later Romantic showdown of Brahms and Wagner. Come be inspired by noble brass, exciting strings and percussion, and lovely winds.
