About this Event

SRP is hosting a Collage Art Workshop facilitated by Jay Cabalu, a collage artist.

Jay Cabalu is a Filipino-Canadian artist based in Vancouver, BC, on the ancestral and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations. Working primarily with 100% hand-cut collage and found materials, he transforms magazines, comics, and print media into intricate artworks that challenge narratives shaped by mass media, consumer culture, and representation.

Since earning his BFA from Kwantlen Polytechnic University in 2013, Cabalu has exhibited nationally and internationally, with his work featured in exhibitions exploring queer Asian identity in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. His collage practice reimagines the visual language of advertising and popular culture, creating vibrant compositions that reveal the contradictions beneath images of pleasure, luxury, and belonging.

Cabalu's recent solo exhibitions include Extra (2022), POP ODY$$EY (2023), Bunso (2024), and hyperfiXation (2026). His work is held in private collections across Canada, the United States, Hong Kong, and the Philippines.

This is an indoor venue. Masks are welcome and will be provided if needed.

Workshop Details:

• All materials will be provided, but feel free to bring your own!
• Pay-what-you-can tickets are available. Please email us at [email protected] to request. Limited amount
• Disclaimer: SRP events are filmed and photographed. Ask for a sticker at registration if you do not want your pictures or videos taken.
• The event location is a 10-minute walk from the Surrey Central SkyTrain Station or one bus stop away (R1 to Guildford). Additional details below:

1. Exit the SkyTrain station and walk towards 104 Street (This is in the opposite direction of Surrey Central Mall)

2. Take a right on 104 Street and walk straight.

3. Walk straight until you reach Whalley Boulevard (there will be a “Budget Brake & Muffler” Store with a bright Yellow Sign at this intersection).

4. Turn right on Whalley Boulevard, but make sure you are on the left side of the road. As you walk down Whalley Boulevard, you should pass by a Bon Ga Korean Restaurant to your left.

5. Shortly after, you will find Solid State to your left. Pictures below.

6. Welcome! Feel free to open the door, take your shoes off, and grab a mask if you prefer!

Accessibility, Dietary, & Other Info:

• 😷Masks are optional and provided at registration and are not mandatory, as this event will have food provided.
• We will do our best to provide food options for all types of diets! However, we ask participants to be mindful of their own dietary restrictions and allergies, as we cannot guarantee no cross-contamination. If you have any questions, please email SRP.
