Spend the day with Texas Folklife in the Rio Grande Valley for a full celebration of music, culture, and living tradition!
Tejano/Norteño/Conjunto Convening & Sustainability Salon | 10 AM to Noon
A Texas Folklife convening of nonprofit leaders, musicians, and cultural workers dedicated to sustaining conjunto, Tejano, and norteño music in South Texas.
Through intimate conversations and strategy-driven genre demonstrations, we will explore questions of legacy, stewardship, and cultural continuity—while holding space for the creative tensions, regional distinctions, and evolving identities within and between these music communities. Together, we consider what it means to honor tradition, navigate change, and ensure this vital soundscape endures for generations to come.

The 2nd Annual Threads of Tradition Festival | 1 PM to 4 PM
Threads of Tradition is a free, one-day celebration honoring the women artisans and tradition bearers whose work shapes the cultural life of South Texas. Held at the ACE Center ahead of The Big Squeeze Youth Accordion Competition, this vibrant daytime gathering invites the public to meet artists, purchase handcrafted goods, and learn directly from the makers themselves.
Artisans from the Rio Grande Valley will be set up throughout the space to sell their work and discuss the stories, skills, and histories behind their artistry. Featured practices may include fiber arts, embroidery, herbal traditions, painting, woodworking, traditional foodways, and other culturally rooted crafts. Join us for a day of art, music, and living tradition as we celebrate the hands and stories that carry culture forward.
Funding provided by the Alice Kleberg Reynolds Foundation
