About this Event
Higher Computing Science Tutoring Program:
Weekly Group Sessions: Our tutor-led, one-to-many sessions are designed specifically for students studying SQA Higher Computing Science. These 40-minute lessons are available both in-person at our Edinburgh centre and virtually, offering a flexible learning experience. Our classes aim to provide a more focused and in-depth learning environment compared to traditional school lessons, helping students bridge any knowledge gaps they may have due to school absences or other challenges.
One-to-One Tuition: For students seeking a more personalised approach, we offer one-to-one tuition, either in-person or online from our Edinburgh centre. These 40-minute sessions are targeted at students studying Higher Computing Science and allow for individual attention, enabling the tutor to tailor lessons specifically to the student's needs. This format allows for in-depth support, with the tutor able to focus entirely on the student’s strengths and areas for improvement, without the distraction of a group setting. The personalised nature of the tuition allows students to progress at their own pace, building both knowledge and confidence.
Slots for each are available on a a limited basis.
Course Time : 10:40am to 11:20am each Saturday. For further information, please contact.
Knowledge Assessment:
To assess your current understanding, we provide an initial aptitude test. This helps determine your current level of knowledge and any areas that require focus.
Who is this course for?
This course is ideal for learners preparing for the SQA Higher Computing Science exam. It offers opportunities to develop and enhance skills in independent learning, teamwork, critical thinking, problem-solving, research, communication, and peer evaluation across a variety of contexts.
Topics Covered:
Our course is aligned with the SQA Higher Computing Science curriculum. The four key areas of study covered in detail are:
The course mentioned in the subject has four areas of study:
1. Software design and development
Candidates acquire a comprehensive understanding of advanced concepts and practical problem-solving techniques in software design and development. This is achieved through the use of appropriate modular software development environments. By engaging in the processes of analysis, design, implementation, testing, and evaluation, candidates develop modular programming and computational thinking skills. They also enhance their ability to explain the functionality of their programs. With a deep understanding of data types and computational constructs, candidates are able to create efficient and effective programs to address complex problems.
Key areas of focus include:
- Development Methodologies
- Analysis
- Design
- Implementation (Data Types and Structures)
- Implementation (Computational Constructs)
- Implementation (Algorithm Specification)
- Testing
- Evaluation
- Practice through Past Papers and Quizzes
2. Computer systems
Candidates deepen their understanding of how data and instructions are stored in binary form, as well as the various factors influencing system performance. They also develop awareness of the environmental impact of intelligent systems and gain insight into the security risks associated with computer systems. Additionally, candidates explore the precautions and legal frameworks that help safeguard these systems.
Key lessons covered include:
- Data Representation
- Computer Structure
- Environmental Impact of Intelligent Systems
- Security Risks and Precautions
- Practice through Past Papers and Quizzes
3. Database design and development
Candidates acquire in-depth knowledge, understanding, and advanced practical problem-solving skills in database design and development. This is achieved through a series of practical tasks, utilizing a minimum of three interrelated tables, implemented using SQL. Candidates apply computational thinking to analyze, design, implement, test, and evaluate solutions, employing a variety of development tools. Additionally, they demonstrate interpretative skills by addressing tasks that include complex elements in both familiar and novel contexts.
Core areas of study include:
- Analysis
- Design
- Implementation
- Testing
- Evaluation
- Practice through Past Papers and Quizzes
4. Web design and development
Candidates develop comprehensive knowledge, understanding, and advanced practical problem-solving skills in web design and development through a variety of practical and investigative tasks. They apply computational thinking to analyse, design, implement, test, and evaluate web-based solutions, utilizing a range of development tools including HTML, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), and JavaScript. Candidates also enhance their interpretative skills by tackling tasks with complex elements in both familiar and unfamiliar contexts.
Key lessons include:
- Analysis
- Design
- Implementation (HTML)
- Implementation (CSS)
- Implementation (JavaScript)
- Testing
- Evaluation
- Practice through Past Papers and Quizzes
The syllabus is regularly updated to reflect the latest SQA requirements and guidelines.
