the dojo is still open and we are planning the spring seminar featuring Wes Shimokawa.
The first class is Friday night, March 13th, 7:00 p.m. start time and then Saturday morning 10:00 to noon afternoon 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. then Sunday morning 10:00 a.m. to noon.

Wesley Yukio Shimokawa Sensei, 7th dan, was born on September 15, 1955, in the town of Lihue, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Shimokawa Sensei began his formal instruction in Aikido at the age of 9 under his father, Minoru Shimokawa,who, as a former boxer in the U.S. Army, instilled a pragmatic approach to self-improvement that is best characterized through the guiding principle: “whatever you do, make sure it works.”
ng from high school and receiving shodan in 1973, Shimokawa Sensei moved to the island of Oahu to attend college and became a student of Robert Aoyagi Shihan, Chief Instructor, at the Honolulu Aiki Dojo, which was the only dojo outside of Japan blessed by O’Sensei in 1961. Shimokawa Sensei began teaching in 1980, and through this exposure was recruited to become the Deputy Sheriff for self-defense training for nearly a decade at Honolulu Sheriff’s Department, which provided him with invaluable feedback on martial training efficacy.
In 1991, Shimokawa Sensei returned to Kauai after being promoted to rokudan by Aoyagi Sensei, and after several years of back-yard Aiki training established Lihue Aiki Kai where he continues to practice today. Two decades later, Shimokawa Sensei had the honor of receiving his nanadan from Doshu, Moriteru Ueshiba, at the 50th anniversary of O’Sensei’s visit to Hawaii. Over the last 60 years, Shimokawa Sensei has had the privilege of receiving the direct transmission of Aikido from many master teachers and is intent on continuing to share his passion for Aikido with others for as long as it works.
