In this 3-day class, students will design, build, and paint their very own sculptures! The project will take place over several guided steps, allowing students to explore creativity while learning real sculpting techniques.
Project Overview
- Step 1 – Brainstorming & Sketching
- Students will begin by brainstorming ideas and creating simple sketches of what they want their sculpture to look like.
- Step 2 – Building the Base Structure
- Using wire, tin foil, and hot glue, students will construct the basic shape and form of their sculpture.
- Step 3 – Sculpting & Adding Details
- Students will apply air-dry clay, shaping and refining details. Once the sculptures have dried, we will reinforce any delicate areas and smooth out cracks.
- Step 4 – Painting
- Students will paint their sculptures using acrylic paint, adding color, texture, and personality.
- Step 5 – Finishing Touches
- Each sculpture will be sealed with varnish to protect the paint and create a finished look.
Important Note
We will be using air-dry clay and acrylic mediums, which are not weather-resistant. Finished sculptures should not be used as outdoor decorations.
What to Bring
- 2–3 printed reference photos related to what your child wants to sculpt. For example, if Natalie wants to sculpt a cat, she should bring 2–3 pictures of cats in different poses, colors, or angles.
- Clothes that can get messy.
