About this Event
Join Richard Aracil for a morning of birdwatching on Sunday, May 3 at 8:30 a.m. before the garden is open to the public, when the birds are likely to be very active. In addition to our year-round residents, we will encounter birds on their spring migration. We may see finches, sparrows, warblers, and others. This walk is appropriate for beginners and experienced birdwatchers.
Bring your own binoculars (8 x 42 are the best for birding but others can work). Dress appropriately for the weather. We will be walking on uneven ground, flights of stairs, grass, gravel, and woodchip paths, so WEAR STURDY SHOES. Consider wearing a hat and sunscreen and bringing water with you.
Your guide, Richard Aracil, grew up in the Bronx where he first became fascinated with birds around the age of 15 through going for walks in Pelham Bay Park with his parents and grandfather. His grandmother gave him his first Sibley Guide. Birds have since become his passion and a lifelong pursuit. After graduating from SUNY-ESF, he became a traveling field biologist working on various ornithological research projects across the lower 48, Maui and Kauai, New Brunswick, Canada; Sonora, Mexico; Cockscomb Basin in Belize; the Manu region of Peru; the Colombian Choco; and Kinabalu Park in Bornean Malaysia. He is also an avid Bronx patch birder and county life lister. He also enjoys cycling and bikepacking, usually while birding at the same time.
