Rafe Crompton is not a stern man, but he lives by unswerving ideals that he expects his family to comply with. His children, adult and teenage, may pay lip service to his expectations, but bear underlying resentments.
Emotions boil to the surface when Rafe and his youngest daughter Hilda clash on a matter of principle over a fried herring (Yes, a fried herring). Rafe’s wife Daisy, his sons Harold and Wifred, eldest daughter Florence all taking their own particular stance as the situation escalates and threatens to fragment the family. Throw a scrounging next-door neighbour Betsy Jane, Florence’s no-nonsense fiancée Arthur, and Hilda’s secret into the mix and you have the perfect recipe for a gritty, funny, and deliciously poignant northern drama.
