The Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine Equine Castration Clinic

Castrations will be performed by third-year veterinary students under the direct supervision of board-certified faculty veterinarians from the OSU Veterinary Medical Hospital. Owners will be contacted prior to the surgery date to confirm participation.

There is no charge for the castration; however, costs associated with complications occurring due to the inherent risks of the procedure(s) are the owner/agent's responsibility.

A limited number of tickets are available. Please register to reserve a spot if your animal is eligible.

• Equid Castration
• Wolf Teeth Extraction (Optional)

Eligible: Horses, Donkeys, and Mules

Ages: 1 Month - 15 Years

Please email first if your animal is older. A licensed veterinarian will confirm if your animal may attend the clinic.

1. Must be halter broken to safely lead on a halter.

2. Registration is limited to 3 equids per owner. (Please email if you wish to bring more than 3 animals).

3. Both testicles must be visibly descended. No cryptorchids.

4. Negative EIA (Coggins): Within the last 6 months at the time of appointment (blood draws on the day of the procedure are available for $40)

5. Patients must be healthy and not show signs of infectious disease. (Snotty nose, cough, etc.)

6. Must be trailered to/from the hospital the day of procedure.

7. All animals will need to be dropped off between 12:30 and 1 pm and picked up before 5:30pm. Owners can wait and observe the procedure if they desire.

• Tetanus prophylaxis
• Antibiotic injection
• Appropriate anesthesia and analgesia during and after the procedure

Any complications resulting from the inherent risk of castration will be at the owner/agent's expense. Castrations will be performed by third-year veterinary students under the supervision of licensed equine veterinarians. Castration carries an inherent risk of complications. Severe complications, including death, are rare but can occur. Costs associated with treating major complications are the responsibility of the owner/agent.
