Discover the magic and joy of creating with chalk while learning invaluable art skills in this 5-day Sidewalk Chalk Camp.
This is the perfect class to start you on your way with color theory/drawing skills that can be used with any type of medium.
-Day 1: Dive into color theory as we learn how the primary colors work together to create a color wheel, enjoy the beauty of blending, and experiment mixing a variety of color temperatures as we master the techniques of applying chalk to concrete. Challenge yourself to create using only the primary colors.
-Day 2: Work together as a group to create a beautiful masterpiece. Using what was learned in Day 1, we’ll make a large mosaic, with each participant adding to the uniqueness of the piece.
-Day 3: Using a chalk line, we will create and practice using a grid to obtain a more precise image. Online sources for grid creation will be provided as well for at-home grid use.
-Day 4: Discover foundational tools to draw freehand including identifying shapes, proportions, and use of space to construct a loose sketch. Work with the instructor to plan the final image.
-Day 5: This day is a 2-hour session rather than 90 minutes. Each participant will have an area of 2’x3’ that they will use for their own previously planned design and will have help and direction from the instructor as they work on the final project. Family/friends are invited to join the last 10 minutes of Day 5 to view the art and take pictures.
-Price of class is $90 per participant. All art supplies are included. At the end of the class, you will be able to bring home your own supplies to continue your sidewalk chalk journey including a 48-piece Crayola chalk set, a 48-piece set of soft pastels (high pigmented chalks), gloves/blending tools to protect your hands, and a roll of tape to make your own mosaics or clean edged art pieces at home. Wear clothes that can get dirty and bring a spill-proof water bottle.
-This class best serves adults and children aged 12+. This class has served participants as young as 10 in the past and may accept that age on a case by case basis depending on their interest, attention span, and skill level.
-Class is limited to 10 participants. Spots are held only after payment is made. Payment is accepted through Venmo.
-This week-long class will be held from 9-10:30 am every day starting Monday June 2nd and will run until June 6th. The last day of class will be extended slightly and end at 11 am for participants to have time to finish their final project. Address for location will be provided at the time of registration.
-Class is taught by Jamie Vandenberg, a self-taught sidewalk chalk artist who has been creating chalk art for over 10 years. Jamie started competing in sidewalk chalk competitions 7 years ago. The skills she has obtained from chalk over the years have helped her work in other mediums including charcoal, watercolor, pastels, markers, and colored pencil, and she continues to explore and learn new art mediums.
