SPLAS FILM CLUB 2025-2026

The Instituto Cervantes, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, is proud to present a special screening of the film Abel (2010), directed by Diego Luna, as part of the SPLAS Film Club 2025-2026.

Abel follows the story of a nine-year-old boy whose silence and difficult behavior lead to his admission to a mental health facility. His single mother persuades his doctor to allow Abel to spend a week at home, hoping that reuniting him with his brother and sister will help him heal. With their father absent, Abel unexpectedly becomes a father figure, bringing the family closer together.

This touching film explores themes of childhood trauma, family bonds, and emotional resilience with warmth and sensitivity.

El Instituto Cervantes, en colaboración con la Universidad de Leeds, se enorgullece de presentar una proyección especial de la película Abel (2010), dirigida por Diego Luna, dentro del ciclo SPLAS Film Club 2025-2026.

Abel cuenta la historia de un niño de nueve años cuyo silencio y comportamiento difícil lo llevan a ser ingresado en un centro de salud mental. Su madre soltera convence al médico para que le permita pasar una semana en casa, con la esperanza de que reunirse con su hermano y hermana le ayude a sanar. Con la ausencia del padre, Abel se convierte inesperadamente en una figura paterna que une a la familia.

Esta emotiva película aborda temas como el trauma infantil, los lazos familiares y la resiliencia emocional con calidez y sensibilidad.
