Spiritual Americana!
Schedule
Sat, 02 May, 2026 at 07:30 pm
UTC-04:00Location
Bel Air High School (Bel Air, Maryland) | Bel Air, MD
The concert will begin with Samuel Barber’s moving and popular Adagio for Strings. Samuel Barber was from just up Route 1 in West Chester, PA! A combined choir will perform Aaron Copland's "Zion's Walls." Then, Ohio composers Jesse Ayers and Charles Myricks, Jr. arranged a medley of spirituals for baritone voice, chorus, and orchestra entitled "There’s a Stirrin’ in the Water." This work has been well-received at its initial performances in Ohio.
The second half of the concert will begin with Maryland composer Michael Fili’s concert fanfare for brass and percussion entitled "The Old Line" in honor of Maryland and the 250th anniversary of the United States. The remainder will be an all-Gershwin event featuring his ever popular "Rhapsody in Blue" with pianist Washington Garcia, and the Rumba-influenced Cuban Overture. Our friend Washington Garcia is well-known in Maryland, having attended Peabody and performed a Mozart Piano Concerto with the SSO in the past.
There will be a pre-concert talk at 7 pm. Come early and visit the tables in the lobby for local artists, authors, and artisans, and get concessions from Coffee Coffee!
While we welcome children, if children cannot remain silent, please escort them to the lobby as a courtesy to the other patrons and performers.
We appreciate your support of the orchestra, but please stay home if you are ill for the protection of the community.
