About this Event
The first session will discuss the core mechanics of spinning on a drop spindle to create the simplest type of yarn- singles. You can practice on your own time between sessions and create more single-strand yarn. Session two will cover plying- combining singles into the more familiar multi-stranded yarn. We will also review finishing techniques to make your yarn look its best. The course will conclude with an introduction to the makerspace's Ashford spinning wheel! Spinning on a wheel involves the same mechanics as a drop spindle but can be substantially speedier, so a firm grasp of the basics makes your transition to a wheel much smoother.
Wool and drop spindles will be provided as part of the class fee. This class may not suit those sensitive to wool- you may have itchy fingers. We will discuss other fibers spun into yarn, but wool is the easiest to learn.
The second day is April 24th, 5:30PM - 8PM
Instructor: Anna Morse
Instructor's Bio: Anna is a makerspace member who is passionate about illustration and all things Textiles Lab. They enjoy spinning, weaving, and surface design, and they are a member of the Northern New England Fibershed, which advocates for environmentally sustainable and bioregional fiber production. No special gear is required, though participants should know whether they are sensitive to wool.
For ages 12 and up.
