LETS GET A HUGE TURNOUT FOR THIS FAMILY!!!!!

Sophia Gilbert is a very lively and bright 4-year-old and on June 4th Sophia’s mother happened to notice a protrusion from the right side of Sophia’s abdomen while she was stretching out across her lap. Sophia had been experiencing random fevers on and off the previous week or so as well.
Sophias was taken to the clinic where they didn’t feel anything in her abdomen and attributed fever to a viral infection.
The following Monday Sophia followed up with her pediatrician who examined her and immediately confirmed a palpable mass in her abdomen. Later that day it was confirmed there was a large vascular mass coming from her right kidney and immediately referred to UW pediatric oncology.
CT scan on the 13th 99% confirmed their suspicion of a Wilms Tumor and she was quickly consulted and scheduled for surgery.
On June 24th Sophia had a 14cm tumor removed from her abdomen along with her right kidney, ureter, and surrounding lymph nodes. They reported that it would take about a week for pathology results to determine and confirm treatment plan. Sophia has been recovering well the past two weeks since surgery, we expected nothing less from her.
Unfortunately pathology did not come back with the results we wanted. She was diagnosed with Stage 3 Diffused Anaplastic Wilms Tumor. This subtype is aggressive and does not respond to traditional treatment and traditional chemotherapy. If not treated, they stated the cancer will guaranteed come back. Treatments are always improving with new medications and protocols.
Sophia was admitted again on Monday, July 7th and had a port placed for access. This is also when the oncology team at UW discussed the protocol that will give Sophia the best chance to beat this.
She will have 14 cycles of chemotherapy. These cycles last from 21-28 days each. She will be admitted for each administration of chemo that will last from 2-5 days each depending on the combination of chemotherapy she will get that cycle. She will also receive radiation starting at cycle 3. This protocol is 42-weeks long.
She had her first round of chemotherapy Tuesday, July 8th.
It may have only been one month since the tumor was confirmed by her pediatrician, but it honestly feels like it’s been a lifetime.
She is so strong willed and so feisty that we know she will get through this and never lose that smile she wears.
