August's spice is jerk seasoning. Jerk cooking is native to Jamaica. It is the act of dry-rubbing or wet-marinating meat in a hot spice mixture known as Jamaican jerk spice. Jerk seasoning's main ingredients are allspice and scotch bonnet peppers with additional spices and herbs to give meat a smoky, spicy, and sweet flavor profile. It is used to season a variety of meats, shellfish, and even tofu and vegetables.
Spice of the Month kits can be picked up August 1-August 7 during the Library’s open hours at pick up at any Suffolk Public Library location. Kits available on a first come, first served basis. No registration required.
