August 2 – Two Chess Tournaments for EVERYBODY!

Where: Edgewood Rec Center - 1980 Brookside Dr, Edgewood, MD 21040
In the morning 4 Round Double Swiss Speed Chess
2 Sections – US Chess Rated and not-US Chess Rated. Each section will be capped at 18 players.

US Chess Rated Section – 4 Round Double Speed Chess Swiss
NOT US Chess Rated Section – 4 Round Double Speed Chess Swiss
Format: 4 rounds of a double Swiss system. When paired, you play two games with your opponent, one with each color. This means a total of 8 games. Players are NOT eliminated.
Time control: G/3+2 – US Chess speed chess rules apply -
This is 3 minutes per player for the game and after each move the player receives an additional 2 seconds.
Prizes:
Rated section: We will have an overall first place prize and a “bottom” half split based on rating. Two books for prizes, Bobby Fischer - My 60 Memorable Games, and Magnus Carlsen - 60 Memorable Games
Not-US Chess Rated section: Two tournament sets for the 1st and 2nd place finishers.
Entry Fee: $5.00 ($7.00 for onsite registration)
Schedule: 9:00 am to 12:40 pm
Registration: 9:00 – 9:45 Don’t be late!
Round 1: 10:00
All other rounds will start at as quickly as we can.
In the afternoon Quick Chess Quads
Again, in two groups, US Chess Rated and non-US Chess Rated. Each group is capped at 16 players.
Format: Quads (see below for details)
Time Control: G/15+5: This time control only affects your Quick Chess rating in US Chess.
Prizes: The winner of each quad receives a free year’s membership to the Emmorton Rec Chess Club.
Entry Fee: $5.00 ($7.00 for onsite registration)
Schedule: 9:00 am to 3:30 pm
Registration closes: 12:45 pm. Don’t be late!
Round 1: 1:00 pm
All other rounds will start at as quickly as we can.
Quad Chess Tournament Format:
1. Registration: After registration, players are sorted by rating, from highest to lowest. – For non-US Chess Players this will be by age.
2. Grouping: Players are then grouped into sets of four.
3. Round Robin: Each group of four players participates in a round-robin style tournament, where every player faces each other.
4. Adjustment for Non-Multiples of 4: If the total number of registrations is not a multiple of 4, a separate three-round Swiss tournament is organized for the bottom 5 to 7 players.

This is advance notice before we post this on the US Chess site. With limited space, you might want to act fast!
We provide boards, sets, and clocks.
We will be tight on time! When registration opens, register!!! AND BE ON TIME!!! We need to be out of the venue at 3:30.
We will use the latest US Chess published rating.
If playing in both the Speed Chess Swiss and Quick Chess Quads, you may want to pack a lunch.
