About this Event
What do you want your future to look like? Make zines that explore your visions of the future!
Local artist and organizer Naina will teach a guided zine-making workshop as part of the “Claiming the Future” exhibition. Participants will imagine different futures and create speculative zines about them using simple illustration and collage. In this workshop, they will learn a brief history of zines as a tool for collective action, discuss the prompts, learn simple zine making techniques, assemble and design their zines, and share collectively.
Participants are encouraged to think about what they want from their future, how the future might look different from the present, and what actions we can take to get there.
Materials will be provided and all experience levels are welcome!
The gallery will open at 1PM, the workshop will start at 1:30.
Artist Bio:
Naina is a Baltimore-based multimedia artist, studying physics and visual art at Johns Hopkins University. They have been doing art for over fifteen years and love experimenting with different media and techniques, particularly zines, illustration, printmaking, and jewelry.
Naina tells stories at the intersections of queerness, disability, Black & brown culture, revolutionary work, and nature in their art to create roadmaps for a shared future.
Their work is an entry point to hidden histories and worldviews; it is shaped by their love for South Asian poetry forms & textile motifs, space & physics metaphors, and creatures of all kinds.
Since moving to Baltimore for college, Naina has been involved in local queer-centered creative events and spaces: vending at art markets with their partner, guest lecturing for JHU courses, and leading student workshops on zines, poetry, art, and queer history. They are on the board of their undergraduate Queer club and Vice President of the poetry club, organizing events, workshops, and collaborations. They have been part of multiple art exhibitions and had their first solo showcase in October 2024.
