Epic Journey, a Monarch's Story
Join us to learn about an epic 2,500-mile journey—made by an insect that weighs less than an ounce. Most people learn how to identify a monarch butterfly when they’re lucky enough to have one visit their yard. As young children, we’re also taught about their amazing four-stage life cycle in preschool. But do you know how some monarchs survive as adults for up to eight months instead of just one—and how they travel to a specific grove of fir trees on mountain tops in Michoacán, Mexico, even though they’ve never been there before?
In this program, we’ll discuss how engaging monarchs are at every stage of their life cycle, along with the timing of each stage. We’ll focus especially on the difference between spring/summer monarchs and fall monarchs. You’ll also learn how this multi-generational migration works—and why scientists still don’t fully understand it. We’ll wrap up with simple ways you can help monarchs and attract them to your yard or garden, so you can witness some of the magic firsthand.
Free and open to the public.
