Special Mosses for Beginners Hike at Edgewood Park & Natural Preserve

Winter rains wake up beautiful mosses! Learn about these tiny and fascinating plants on this free hike with FoE Docent Rebecca Reynolds. We will meet at the Ed Center at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17th and spend some time looking closely at 10-20 of the easily accessible examples and learning a few fascinating details about mosses in general.

We will amble at a moderate pace and make frequent stops to take a closer look at what we find along the trail. Bring a 10x or 15x magnifying lens (or loupe), if you have one. We have a few to lend, but you may want your own to see the mosses in detail.

This event is geared toward adults and older children interested in learning more about mosses found in San Mateo County’s only natural preserve.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring water. Trails may be muddy. Consider rain gear, a hat, and snacks. Restrooms and water are available only at the Ed Center and the picnic area near the Sylvan Trailhead. Please plan ahead. Note that Edgewood’s many narrow trails cannot accommodate strollers.

All participants, including children, must be registered individually and have approved the liability waiver through Eventbrite. Details on where to meet will be emailed to participants before the event.

We will still hike in light showers, but a heavy downpour cancels this hike.

Group size is very limited. Please cancel your reservation if you are unable to attend so others may have a chance to join us.

We ask folks to register for our hikes in order to keep group sizes manageable, but often we have a few no shows. You are welcome to drop-in 10 minutes before the beginning of the hike to see if there might be extra room. Unfortunately, we cannot confirm whether there will be space for drop-in hikers in advance.
